Detention is already a severe restriction of a person’s freedom. But some detainees are subject to even greater restrictions during their time in custody.

In this booklet, we examine how restrictive regimes are used to manage detainees, and how this practice affects them, their families and staff. We also explore ways to curb the use of restrictive measures and, where they are used, to limit the harm they cause.
