Each year dozens of journalists on mission are killed, wounded, arrested, abducted or lost without trace. The ICRC can intervene to help a journalist in danger only in an armed conflict or in a situation of internal disturbance or tension. The author analyses the provisions of international humanitarian law which grant protection to journalists and draws attention to the ambiguity of their status during dangerous missions.
