Handbook of International Humanitarian Law in South Asia

By V.S. Mani (Ed.) (Author)
Published : 2007

Description

The purpose of international humanitarian law (IHL) is to protect victims of armed conflict regardless of the legitimacy or otherwise of such conflicts. In this book specialists from around the region examine the contributions of the ancient South Asian civilizations - Hindu, Buddhist, Christian, and Islamic - to the principles of IHL, the contemporary national attitudes of individual countries, case studies on the application of IHL, and the treatment of refugees in the region. This book poses the question whether South Asian countries live up to international treaty obligations and studies the role of humanitarian organizations in the promotion of IHL in this part of the world.
